In order to open DivX files, you will need a Quicktime components, such as Perian installed. While the AVI format is supported, its common codec (DivX) is not. A common culprit for blank screens are AVI files. However, in order for a video to be playable in GIF Brewery, the file's format & video codec must both be supported. Many common file-formats & codecs are supported by GIF Brewery by default. Opening a supported file-format (such as AVI), but using unsupported codec (such as DivX).
