![]() To prepare for the show, Patton, a member of the Nu Theta Chapter of Grand Valley State University, says the 14 steppers and four extras that make the 18-member team has practiced together everyday for almost two months for at least four hours a day. “Creating a statewide step team for AKA hasn’t been done in while…we’re trying to do something memorable,” says 22-year-old Jennifer Patton. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of their organization, several chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha from across the state of Michigan are coming together to create a “statewide step team” to compete in the Motor City Step Show. In addition to providing Detroiters with an event “where you can bring your kids to your grandma,” Hubert hopes the event will help expose the community, particularly those who have not gone to college, to Black Greek-letter organizations.įormed during a time when African-American students were excluded from membership in collegiate organizations, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity became the first Greek-letter organization followed by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. The origins of step go back to Africa as a form of communication and celebration between tribes, according to Hubert. Stepping, a traditional rhythmic march that uses sounds created from the hands, chest and feet as well as singing and chanting in unison to form a synchronized beat has been a staple of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations since the ‘70s. To make the event more interesting, the step show will include a concert from rap star Juvenile. This is the real deal,” says Hubert, 33, as he brings together local step teams of the “Divine Nine” Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities to Chene Park to compete for the title of “Best Step Team” as well as bragging rights for an entire year Saturday for the 5th Annual Motor City Step Show. ![]() But, whatever you do, says Edison “Woody” Hubert, don’t call it “Stomp the Yard.” Call it an exercise in skill and precision. ![]() That’s how continue to grow and elevate our chapter, and that’s how we’ve begun to better meet the diverse needs of the people of the Chicagoland community.įeel free to reach out to us for any questions by emailing and we’ll return your message in 24-48 hours.Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on July 21, 2008Ĭall it a long-standing tradition. We continue to promote individuality and diversity - diverse backgrounds, diverse experiences, diverse mindsets - all operating under the same mission. Having copies of each brother is not how we’ll grow and not how we’ll continue to positively impact people. So even though what we’ve done to date brought us this far, we know it’s not what will sustain us. Our fraternity motto is “building a tradition not resting upon one”. This allowed for an easy and quick bond between the Alpha Theta Omega brothers while generating the momentum needed to progress the young chapter towards its goals - development of scholarships, mentorship programs, programs for youth & families like the non-Greek step show, community events such as family summer BBQs, etc. Our origin and the early years of our chapter is born from brothers that all went to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. We’re made up of not just members of an organization but of brothers with a bond. ![]() Our chapter is well-positioned to step up to the challenge. Though we’re made of strong black men like every Iota chapter across the nation and the world, Alpha Theta Omega has a specific role and focus under the leadership of our national fraternity - to positively impact the lives of the people in the Chicagoland area.ĭoing this requires a connection to the community, an understanding of the issues that need to be addressed, a willingness to serve and the resources to help. Whether you are a brother, an interest, or a future partner, this site gives a small taste of who we are, what we’re about and why we do what we do. My name is John Maynie, and I have the pleasure of serving as the 2023-2024 Chapter Polaris. Welcome to the official website of the Alpha Theta Omega Alumni Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated.
