While that would make performance worse, there is a tipping point where the greater bandwidth of faster memory covers the rise in latency. ![]() It’s effectively the time between clock cycles, and as memory speed increases, timings increase as well, which increases latency. Typically, timings are listed as several numbers separated by dashes, such as 15-15-15-35 or similar. Timings are another aspect of memory that can impact RAM performance, although they are no longer as important. For example, you might see it listed as DDR4-2133 PC4-17000. The number following “PC” is simply the MHz speed multiplied by eight and then rounded. You’ll see these marketed as DDR4-2133 or similar, sometimes with the confusing “PC” label. Typical DDR4 memory runs between 2,133MHz and 3,000MHz, but some can run upwards of 4,866MHz for the fastest kits available, and DDR5 memory can go anywhere up to 7,000MHz in some kits. The memory’s total speed is referred to as bandwidth and measured in megatransfers per second, but traditionally, you’ll see memory marketed with speeds in megahertz (MHz). Like a CPU, RAM has its clock speed, which effectively controls how much data it can handle per second when combined with a few other factors. However, having massive amounts of system memory doesn’t necessarily make a PC run faster, and once you have enough, it’s better to have faster memory, than simply more of it. A PC runs not only the current application but also other services and tasks in the background. Having more than the minimum amount of RAM is essential. Anyone looking to do a lot of video editing, or heavy multi-tasking might want 32GB or even more. This is typically between four gigabytes (GB) and 16GB, though any modern PC running Windows shouldn’t really have any less than 8GB. Operating systems, games, and applications, all need a set amount of RAM to run, and even more to run well. ![]() You need to make sure you have enough RAM. Most modern graphics cards, like AMD’s new RX 7000-series, use GDDR6, but Nvidia has exclusive use of GDDR6X RAM, which can be found in its RTX 3000 and RTX 40-series graphics cards. For game consoles, it can also reference system memory, but in either case, it has to do with memory reserved exclusively for the GPU. Although once a stand-alone piece of technology, VRAM is currently used to denote dedicated memory on the graphics card. They also come in different shapes and sizes, such as being soldered directly onto the motherboard, or SODIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module) which is still a replaceable stick, but is more compact than the DIMM-style memory sticks used on desktop PCs.Īnother common term, especially in the video game space, is VRAM (video RAM). They do, however, require less power to operate, helping to save on battery life. They offer roughly comparable performance to desktop-grade DDR memory, though not quite as fast as the best DDR5 RAM. Mobile platforms, like laptops, tablets, and smartphones, use Low-Power Double Data Rate (LPDDR) memory and are also available in various generations, including LPDDR4, and the most recent, LPDDR5X. Each generation also has physical changes and a reduction in power demand, so they are not interchangeable. The numbers denote the RAM’s generation, with each successive generation offering faster speeds through greater bandwidth - a higher megatransfers per second rating. The most common type of desktop RAM sold today is DDR4, though older systems may use DDR3 or even DDR2, and the latest systems use DDR5. The terminology doesn’t matter beyond technicalities, but it’s useful to know that the terms are relatively interchangeable colloquially. “RAM” or “memory” typically refers to dynamic random access memory (DRAM), or more accurately for modern systems, synchronous dynamic random access memory ( SDRAM). ![]() However, those storage components are necessary because they provide the longer-term storage of that data when the RAM is no longer powered. As fast as modern storage is compared to drives of years gone by, they’re still far slower than RAM. RAM prevents other components from digging through the device’s slower storage - like a hard drive or even a solid-state drive (SSD) - every time you request a new browser tab or load a new enemy to shoot. Then the RAM is cleared and ready to receive new, relevant data. That information stays in the RAM, readily accessible, until you shut down the program, or restart your device. It reads information that an application or operating system might need in the near future, and stores it temporarily for quick access by the CPU, graphics card, or any other component that might need it. ![]() RAM is essentially a device’s short-term memory. These file-encrypting attacks continue unabated this year. The last few months have seen the only attack on the Colon Colonial Pipeline that forced the company to cut off most of its east coast – and its gas supply, a hack from meat supplier JBS that abruptly shut down its slaughterhouse. The world, and just this month IT supply chain Cassia was hit by a supply chain attack that saw hundreds of streams of people locked out of their systems. However, as ransom attacks continue to make headlines, it is almost impossible to understand their full impact, and as cybercriminals pay to demand their release – it is not known whether some decisions have been made. Jack Cable, a security architect for the Krebs Stamos Group who previously worked for the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), is trying to solve that problem by launching a public release tracking website. “Through Katie Nichols’ tweet, I was inspired to start ransomware that no one really knows the full impact of cybercrime and ransomware in particular,” she told Cable TechCrunch. “After seeing that there is currently no single place for public data on rinsomware payments and that it is not very difficult to track bitcoin transactions, I started hacking it all together.” The website maintains an ongoing statistic of the ransom paid to cybercriminals on Bitcoin, thanks to the public record-keeping of transactions on the blockchain. Since the site is crowded, it includes data on self-reported incidents of ransomware attacks, which anyone can submit. However, to ensure that all reports are valid, a screenshot of the ransom payment needs to be taken for each submission and each case is reviewed by itself before it becomes publicly available. If the authenticity of an approved report is later questioned, it will be removed from the database. The already growing database, which does not include any personal or victim-identifying information, is available as a free download for the cybersecurity community and law enforcement officials, which will only hopefully help provide some much-needed public clarity about the current situation. The FBI notes in its annual IC3 report that ransomware is uniquely underreported, and its statistics can't really be trusted. Various blockchain analysis groups have the means to compile ransomware statistics, but only for a price. That is unfortunate, as the information would be invaluable as researchers hope to get a handle on the scope of ransomware and what could be done to prevent further outbreaks. "We don't have at least publicly comprehensive data sets for payments. And without that, it can be hard to gauge the impact of whether what we're doing makes a difference," said Jack Cable, a Krebs Stamos Group researcher. ![]() In his spare time Cable's working on Ransomwhere, an open visualization website analyzing Bitcoin wallet transactions. Cable formally launched the site last week, based on publicly available wallet information, user wallet submissions and bulk information donations from researchers. If the project goes well, Cable sees it as a means to evaluate the success of different ransomware prevention policies. "People have proposed different ways of combating ransomware via economic means, whether that's outright banning payments or other methods, such as Putin to get some of this under control. But we need to actually know how well things are working and whether these actions are changing the game," said Cable.īased on limitations in the amount of data Cable has been able to aggregate, the site currently tracks $60 million in ransomware transactions over the course of history. The FBI, in the statistic it worried was wildly underreported, saw $29 million in transactions last year alone. The blockchain analytics group Chainalysis pegs the yearly number at close to $350 million. The $60 million Cable can currently track is not a representational sample. ![]() To prepare for the show, Patton, a member of the Nu Theta Chapter of Grand Valley State University, says the 14 steppers and four extras that make the 18-member team has practiced together everyday for almost two months for at least four hours a day. “Creating a statewide step team for AKA hasn’t been done in while…we’re trying to do something memorable,” says 22-year-old Jennifer Patton. In addition to providing Detroiters with an event “where you can bring your kids to your grandma,” Hubert hopes the event will help expose the community, particularly those who have not gone to college, to Black Greek-letter organizations.įormed during a time when African-American students were excluded from membership in collegiate organizations, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity became the first Greek-letter organization followed by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity. The origins of step go back to Africa as a form of communication and celebration between tribes, according to Hubert. Stepping, a traditional rhythmic march that uses sounds created from the hands, chest and feet as well as singing and chanting in unison to form a synchronized beat has been a staple of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations since the ‘70s. To make the event more interesting, the step show will include a concert from rap star Juvenile. Nest box management: Several boxes may be set up in the same yard.Mounting posts can be made of wood or steel. Ventilation is essential some designs have ventilation shafts through the structures center while others are ventilated by small holes drilled in the compartments. Wood houses should be ½ to ¾ inches thick to insulate against the heat and cold. PVC structures are inexpensive to construct and very durable but can be difficult to clean. Houses made from PVC pipe material and Masonite are also available. Aluminum apartments are very durable and will remain attractive for years without extensive maintenance. Each compartment should be about 6X6X6 inches in size and have 2 ¼ inch entry holes. Although martins don’t seem to mind the bright interior, the compartments will likely need to be fitted with a special hole-shape to keep starlings out. For this reason, aluminum structures are considered by many to be ideal as they are lightweight and reflective. Nest boxes should be constructed of a lightweight material. The entrance hole should be 2 ¼ inches in diameter, and three to six quarter inch drainage holes should be drilled into the bottom. After they are dried, gourds should be painted with white oil-based paint to minimize heat. They should be soaked for 15 minutes in copper sulfate solution (one pound copper sulfate dissolved in five gallons of water). Gourds may last up to 30 years if properly maintained. House designs: Native Americans attracted purple martins to their villages by hanging gourds, a housing technique still used today.Do not eliminate the old nest boxes until some of the martins have accepted the new ones. If nest boxes must be changed, do it over a two year period. Then lower and/or plug boxes after fall migration to prevent usage by sparrows and starlings. Young birds may discover it as they head south. If the house is not used in the spring, leave it up until after fall migration. House height may range from 8 to 30 feet, but 12 to 14 feet is recommended. It sometimes takes several years to attract martins to a new site. Open areas near water are especially attractive to martins. Martins need a place to perch that provides the best view of open space where insects may be flying. Location: The house should be placed within 100 feet of human activity (house, barn or garden) and must be at least 40 feet from buildings, trees and other obstructions. These are house location, design and nest management. Three key factors should be considered when attempting to attract purple martins. Most mosquito species are not active during the day when martins are feeding. They do not eat a significant number of bees or mosquitoes as widely believed. These swallows primarily eat insects caught in the air like wasps, grasshoppers, butterflies, and dragonflies. Martins usually abandon their nest a few days after the young fledge and begin gathering at communal nesting sites prior to migration in late August or early September. The chicks are able to leave the nest about 28 days after hatching. Males help insulate these eggs while the female is away. Colonial nesters, both sexes help in the construction of nests made of mud, grasses, leaves, twigs, straw and pine needles. Adults arrive in Oklahoma mid-February through May with previous year’s young arriving four to six weeks later. Martins are in the group of birds known as Neotropical migrants they nest in Oklahoma in the summer and spend winters in Central and South America.
